This course is designed to introduce students to a broad survey of theoretical trends and current
issues in linguistics, as well as the practical application of linguistic theories. Digital technology
helps expose students to linguistic theories which include a brief introduction to (a) the
Bloomfieldian school, (b) the Chomskyan school, and (c) the study of language in context—the
last concentrating on (1) sociolinguistics, the (2) relationship between language and culture, and
(3) language and gender. The application of these theories is made clear by discussing such
topics as (a) Contrastive Analysis and CA hypotheses, (b) the Bloomfieldian school and Audio
Lingual Method, and (c) Linguistics and Translation.
