This course, which constitutes one of the research courses, is designed to develop students’ understanding of the basic principles of discourse analysis. The course allows students to identify varieties of both written and spoken discourses and the possible difficulties in having a clear-cut divide between the two. Capitalizing on linguistic concepts (micro and macro), the analysis of discourse, which is focused on language in use, is oriented towards the students’ awareness of the various factors attributable to the understanding of intentionality and potential implications of discourse. The course leads students to the understanding of both textually-oriented and socially-oriented views of discourse analysis. In light of the lucrative benefits of technological development, corpus approaches (employing digital tools) to discourse analysis are attended to in view of validity in discourse analysis.
